How to Support a Loved One in Private Rehab

What is the cycle of addiction?

The cycle of addiction is a pattern that many individuals find themselves caught in. It usually starts with initial use, which may be fun or relaxing at first but can quickly spiral into a dependence on substances just to get through the day. You might find yourself reaching for that drink or drug just to feel 'normal.' This phase is followed by withdrawal, where the absence of the substance can lead to discomfort, pushing you back into use again. But understanding this cycle is like finding a light in the darkness; it's the first step toward breaking its powerful grip and finding relief.

First use

The first stage of any addiction is always the first use of the drug. It might be as simple as the milestone moment of having your first drink or needing prescription pain management. Whatever reason you began taking a particular drug, certain circumstances can make addiction more likely after that initial use. These circumstances might be a family history of mental health disorder, neglect or abuse, a chaotic living environment or anything else.

Intoxication, binging or misuse

The next stage of the cycle of addiction is misuse or binging. It’s hard to say when misuse begins with some drugs, like prescription medications or alcohol. Some people define this stage as the moment you begin taking a substance in a harmful way, while others say it’s the time you decide to take more than usual. It could also be the point when you’re using a substance for the high or euphoria it creates. Misuse could also be self-medication - treating health problems without a doctor’s advice.

Tolerance

When you use drugs or alcohol over a long period, the drug creates changes in your brain that mean the dose you started with won’t create the same feeling. This is tolerance. The tolerance then causes you to increase how much or how frequently you take drugs or alcohol. This approach may work for a while. But then, you become tolerant to the new amount and need more.

Dependence

When you have a certain amount of tolerance, your body then needs the drug simply to function normally. You may even experience anhedonia, where you can no longer feel any pleasure without the drug. Dependence is the precursor to the cycle of addiction.

Addiction and relapse

In active addiction, you might notice things like using more than you planned to, not being able to keep up with responsibilities, using drugs in situations like driving or operating machinery, and getting withdrawal when you stop using drugs or alcohol.

At this point, you may try to quit, but relapse. You may even have quit and relapsed at earlier stages of the cycle. You might have relapsed due to trying treatments that weren’t quite right, or you tried to quit without any help.
